Type Locality and Naming
The type section of Jinshan Formation is the Luopuqi section. The section is located at Luopuqi valley in Qingshan Township, Harqin Qi, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia (118°30’E, 42°02’N). It lies about 20.5 km northwest of the seat of Harqin Qi, and was measured by The Second Regional Survey Team of Inner Mongolia in 1967. The thickness of formation in the type section is over 419 m as both the top and the base of the formation are unknown. The Jinshan Formation was named by Compiling Group for Liaoning Regional Stratigraphic Scale (1978). The name is derived from Jinshan Town, the seat of Harqin Qi (Banner), southwest of Chifeng City, southeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The formation was originally named Jinshan Group by the Compiling Group for Liaoning Regional Stratigraphic Scale (1978), which is lowered in rank as Jinshan Formation by Li (1996).

Lithology and Thickness
The Jinshan Formation is dominated by a suite of epi-metamorphic rocks, including dark grey and greyish green slate, phyllite, metamorphic sandstone, calcareous sandstone, quartzite, zebra argillaceous limestone, and crystalline limestone, etc.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Neither its lower part nor its lower boundary of the Jinshan Fm is recorded.
Upper contact
The upper boundary of the formation is in angular unconformity with the tuffaceous conglomerate of Upper Jurassic Series.
Regional extent
The Jinshan Formation is exposed in the Northern Hebei-Western Liaoning Area of North China Region, outcropped merely in Jinshan Township, Harqin Banner, Chifeng City, southeastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region

Jinshan Formation yields brachiopods Billingsella ex gr. fluctuose, Eoorthis aff. linnarssoni, and Huenella? sp.

Depositional setting
The formation is assigned to shallow-sea sedimentation setting.
